The
History of Dry stone dyking
Dry stone dykes (walls) goes back many hundreds of
years. Built without
mortar, these sturdy walls provide habitat for small
animals, lichens
and mosses. The stones gathered from the fields were
built into dry
stone walls to form majestic field boundaries.
Stone
walls, stone features and water features are a rural art
form seen
throughout Scotland & Northern England. Each wall
brings a unique
character to the stone used and when built
professionally creates an
imposing natural beauty to gardens, grounds and boundary
walls.
In
Scotland & the Borders towns (Galashiels, Melrose,
Selkirk, Kelso)
the term "Drystone dyker" is used.
Despite
the
differing terms used Neil Moffat designs & builds
stunning dry
stone work across Scotland.
